John Gerrard's work “Western Flag,” which will be on view at the biennial, will be shown simultaneously at Istanbul Bilsart alongside the artist's work “Flag (Nile)” until May 18.
Flag (Nile) 2017 depicts a section of the Nile River near Cairo. The reflections of the buildings and trees on the riverbanks, as well as the colors of the river, have been digitally recreated. At the center of the scene, an image of a gasoline spill is created – it refracts light accurately and sharply depending on the change of time to create a vibrant prismatic field, thus revealing a shape that constantly changes over time. As the viewpoint surrounds this form, the work emerges as a result of the 365-day solar cycle of night and day. The gentle swaying of the waves brings this scene to life and gives the work its name.
