INEZ PISO “SILENT BOUNDARIES”
June 1, 2018 Mardin Cinema Association 5:00 PM
"Every language contains silence as well as words; when we express something we want to say, there are always things we don't say. Language is a tool for organizing our thoughts and communicating them. Every language is equipped with different labels and categories, but these elements also limit the language.
Some feelings, thoughts, and concepts cannot be fully translated and remain confined within the limits of that language. At the same time, because they contain a meaning specific to a culture, they cannot be translated into another language. How are these untranslatable concepts defined in a border region like Mardin, where many cultures intertwine? Could the sounds of different languages you might hear on the streets of Mardin be silenced because of this untranslatability?
In this workshop, we will explore how silent borders are affected by untranslated concepts and how they are expressed. We will discuss the existing boundaries of language and how we make them visible and construct them with different art forms that have different rules.
